I am passionate about helping others to take control of their health.
My father had a heart attack when he was 27 years old, and passed away at with a cardiac arrest at the early age of 47 while at dialysis.
I started taking high blood pressure medication when I was 25 even though I exercised daily, and was in excellent shape. I started taking medication for high cholesterol when I was 33, and acid reflux when I was 43.
When I was 60, my blood pressure when from being in the 120's to the 160's in 3-weeks, and I experienced some sharp stabbing pains in my chest while on the treadmill. My Dr. increased my blood pressure medication twice in 30-days, from 10mg to 20mg to 30mg. I was also sent for a coronary CT scan and echo-cardiogram, and wore a heart monitor for 48hrs.
The results of the coronary CT scan were that my coronary artery was 40 t0 50 percent blocked, and 30 percent calcified. While at my next office visit with my primary care provider, after all the testing had been completed, I asked my Dr. why my blood pressure had gone from the 120's to the 160's in 3-weeks. I was told, "well, I wish I could tell you that, but we see this a lot in people your age." As an Engineer who's job it was to identify root-cause to solve problems and prevent accidents from happening again, that answer didn't set well with me.
I went home, and shortly afterwards I watched the documentary "Forks Over Knives." In that documentary I heard Dr. Esselstyn say that "heart disease was a toothless tiger that need not persist, and in fact with some nutrition and lifestyle changes you could stop and in some cases reverse." I had been a cardiac patient for 35 years, and no one had ever told me that. With the issues I was having, I was motivated and decided to give what Dr. Esselstyn said.
Dr. Esselstyn said that you needed to go on an oil free, whole foods, plant-based diet. You needed to stop eating processed foods and all meat and dairy products. If it had a mother or face, don't eat it.
I decided to try this new diet, and went on it cold turkey the next day. The results were nothing short of amazing. Over the course of the next 7 to 10-days, my blood pressure dropped from the high 120's low 130's to 90/40. My blood pressure had never been that low. I panicked and considered going tor the ER. I was taking the 30mg high blood pressure medication that had been prescribed for me, and thought about the two bottles of 2omg and 10mg tablets that I had in the cabinet. I decided to stop taking the 30mg tablets, and started taking the 20mg tablets. My blood pressure went back up to the 120's, but over the next 7 to 10-days, dropped to 90/40 again. I stopped taking the 20mg tablets and started taking the 10mg tablets, and my blood pressure went back up to the 120's again, but over the next 7 to 10-days dropped to 90/40 again. I thought about stopping taking the 10mg tablets. I had been taking medication for high blood pressure for 35 years. I was afraid to do so, but I did. That was over 2 years ago now, and my blood pressure continues to be in low-normal ranges.
I lost 40-pounds over the first 6-months on the diet, and stopped taking my medication for high cholesterol around 9-months afterwards.
